Modelling Information Flow for a BIM-based Construction Project
Productivity in the construction industry has not been improving as expected while other industries seem to have been able to improve the productivity significantly. This, despite the fact that an appropriate use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technologies is known to bring several benefits and advantages to the construction projects.
The most frequently reported benefits and advantages are related to cost reduction and control, significant time savings and minimization of waste throughout the project life cycle. One form of process waste are the numerous requests for information (RFI) during projects. Planning of an improved information flow helps to eliminate this type of waste in BIM-based projects.
During my speech, I will introduce a model that helps to plan an improved information flow among the main stakeholders in a BIM-based construction project. We will cover the primary stakeholders and their objectives, the current process and value stream as well as the common information flow currently in place in many construction projects. With a proper model it becomes possible to improve the current information flow and to gain the benefits that BIM-based process can offer.
